Join us in celebrating the bunad!
On December 6th, “Traditional Costumes in Norway: Traditional Craftsmanship and Social Practice” will (hopefully!) be added to UNESCO’s list of intangible cultural heritage. This recognition is thanks to the widespread and popular use of bunads, the craftsmanship behind them, and the great diversity of bunad traditions across the country. There are over 450 different bunads in Norway. During the first week of December, they will all officially become part of the world’s living cultural heritage. Folgefonn Folk Art and Craft Association and Hardanger Folk Museum want to celebrate this achievement!
We invite you to an open house and children’s activities at the handicraft booth in Utne from 12:00 – 16:00. Here, people of all ages can come and try some of the many fun techniques used in creating a bunad.
Afterward, we’ll move up to the Hardanger Folk Museum for a bunad café from 18:00 – 19:30. Bring your own handiwork if you’d like. Program highlights include the museum showcasing all six of its pearl crowns and selected gems from its bunad collection, members of the Folgefonn Folk Art and Craft Association demonstrating pearl threading and metal lacework, and a live broadcast from the bunad celebration in Oslo and other bunad events across the country.
Everyone is warmly welcome, bunad-wearers especially!
