Gabriel’s Novgorod
NB! Due to the risk of landslides and closed roads, the concert has been moved to Friday, January 17, at 7:30 PM. Gabriel’s Novgorod consists of Gabriel Fliflet (accordion, vocals), David Chelsom Vogt (fiddle, vocals), Kristoffer Chelsom Vogt (double bass, vocals), and Jørgen Sandvik (guitar, vocals).
At a concert with Gabriel’s Novgorod, you can enjoy original interpretations of lively Finnish humppa, Yiddish tango and wistful waltzes, northern Swedish swing (with Cossack steps), and educational songs in German by Bertolt Brecht/Kurt Weill. Performed with passion, temperament, and powerful four-part harmonies. In a multitude of languages. Ethnic popular music from the Baltic Sea region from the 1930s, 40s, 50s, and 60s! The band also has a tempting bonus repertoire with songs from the west coast of Norway.
Gabriel’s Novgorod was formed in 2003 and has performed at Oslo World, Førdefestivalen, VossaJazz, NattJazz, and Balkanfest.
Gabriel Fliflet grew up surrounded by songs in Swedish, Finnish, Norwegian, German, and other languages. He was named Folk Musician of the Year in 2011. Many know him from his collaboration with drummer Ole Hamre in the duo Fliflet/Hamre, which has been delighting critics and audiences since 1991. In this context, he draws upon his knowledge of ethnic popular music from his Finnish homeland.
David Chelsom Vogt and Jørgen Sandvik have been playing together since they were young. They are best known from the band Real Ones, which won the Bylarm Prize in 2007 and the Spellemann Prize in 2009 and 2013. Jørgen also won the Spellemann Prize for his solo album in 2018.
Award-winning Kristoffer Chelsom Vogt performs with his older brother David in the innovative Kniv og Taffel Swingjazz Orchestra and with Gabriel Fliflet in his and Jon Fosse’s work «Åresong.» Both Kristoffer Vogt and Jørgen Sandvik were central to Fliflet’s commissioned work for Vossajazz 2013 – «Valseria,» and his projects «Songs from the City» and «Sevje.»
