Ross Couper from Shetland (Glasgow) and Tom Oakes from Devon (Edinburgh) are a fiddle and guitar duo deeply rooted in the traditions of Scotland and Ireland but with a vital modernity that chronicles their many musical journeys so far. Expect a highly dynamic mixture of power and fragility with a warmth and humour that leaves audiences exhilarated and entertained.
Ross Couper’s explosive fiddle playing lies at the heart of some of the biggest acts on the Scottish folk scene previously part of Scots Folk Award winning (Band of the Year) Bodega.
He is currently fiddle player in the mighty Peatbog Faeries.
Tom Oakes is a multi award winning guitarist and flautist who as well as being a founder member of the genre defying Auvo Quartet is also known for his work as a solo flautist (A new trio featuring Andy May and Adam Sutherland coming soon. ‘Traditional Spirits’ with Scots harpist Ailie Robertson alongside Fraser Fifield, Adam Sutherland, James Ross, Patsy Reid, Conrad Molleson and Mattie Foulds and a new band with the mighty twin fiddles of Hungarian Fiddle virtuoso Jani Lang and former Malinky fiddler Jon Bews. Tom is also principle traditional flute teacher and DADGAD guitar tutor at the ‘Royal Conservatoire of Scotland’
Ross and Tom have recently performed to great acclaim across Europe with sell-out tours of Norway and Denmark, performances at world famous festivals Shetland Folk Festival and Tønder Festival in Denmark where they played to a 5000 strong outdoor crowd. In 2011 they were nominated for ‘Best up and Coming Act’ in the Scottish Traditional Music Awards and were awarded a coveted 5 Star review for their performance at the Edinburgh Fringe.
They are keen collaborators and have toured with Fiddler’s Bid and Session A9’s Kevin Henderson as well as with multi platinum Danish pop sensation Lukas Graham. Ross and Tom are touring later this year with Edinburgh’s mighty Banana Sessions in September and in November with Kevin Henderson and Mattias Perez.

Torsdag 16. juli kan de høyre romansekonserten «Svarta rosor» ved sopran Oda Marita Netteland Norevik og pianist Maaria Pukkala pĂ¥ Hardanger folkemuseum. Duoen inviterer til ein stemningsfull konsert med nordiske songar av Jean Sibelius, Edvard Grieg, Gunnar de Frumerie og Ture Rangström.
Gjennom songar om kjærleik, natur, lengsel og dei flyktige augneblinkane i livet utforskar duoen den nordiske romansetradisjonen. Programmet spenner frĂ¥ det lyse, vare og intime til det mørke og lidenskapelege, med naturen som spegel for menneskelege kjensler, minne og sakn.
Konserten er inkludert i inngangsbilletten til Hardanger folkemuseum.
