Rosepainters of Hardanger Collected in a New Book
Sverre Strandenes has released a new book, launching at Hardanger Folk Museum on Thursday, January 16, at 7:30 PM. The book, A Journey Among Rosepainters in Hardanger, tells the stories of both local and traveling folk artists who practiced rosemaling (decorative painting) in Hardanger from around 1780 for the next 100 years.
About the Book
“In chests, our ancestors stored their dearest treasures. Close to their hearts, indeed. If a rosemaler (rosepainter) passed by, these cherished storage places were adorned with the most beautiful colors and roses they could afford. A vibrant story in colorful, precise brushstrokes with swirls, flowers, buds, and leaves. The owner’s name and year, elegantly inscribed on the front. Perhaps even a few figures and floral twists hidden under the lid. Work without signatures. Folk art of the highest quality.
Who were these folk artists who gave us this beautiful decoration? Some we have known, but most have been forgotten, or pushed into the shadows of the unknown. With this book by Sverre Strandenes, we are introduced to both the artists and the stories behind them. In a thorough work, we learn about styles, influences, stories, and the travel routes of these often-wandering painters. A book full of vibrant, informative photos taken by the author himself. A beautiful book that documents and provides an insightful overview of this folk art, and will also enhance the value and understanding of these heirlooms for the future,” writes Guttorm A. Rogdaberg in the book’s foreword.
