Lecture on Emigration from Voss to the USA – and a Little from Hardanger

Welcome to a lecture by Eirik Helleve at the Hardanger Folk Museum on Wednesday, December 10 at 2:00 PM.

200 Years Since Emigration Began

This year marks 200 years since the organized mass emigration from Norway to the United States began. Voss quickly became one of the country’s largest emigration districts, and it is believed that more than 7,000 people from Voss left for America. Many of them made their mark in the United States. Earlier this year, Eirik Helleve, director of the Voss Folk Museum, published the book Soria Moria. Emigration from Voss to the USA.

In this lecture, he will talk about various aspects of the emigration, about some of those who distinguished themselves, and a bit about Norwegian America today. He will focus mainly on Voss and people from Voss, but will likely glance toward Hardanger from time to time as well. The lecture is richly illustrated.

The café is open, serving coffee, tea, and lefse or cake.
